Tokyo University of the Arts (JP), University of the Arts Bremen (GER), Art University Halle – Burg Giebichenstein (GER), University of Applied Arts in Vienna (Austria), St Lucas School of Art in Antwerp (Belgium) and the Royal College of Art in London (UK).

About this project:

Building on the cooperation project AAIP that started in 2019, we plan to present the Artist Book and Publication show at the Learning Commons space of the Geidai Library during Geisai and later in November at „tette“ the Sukagawa Community Center public library in Fukushima Ken, and to include the current students of the Printmaking Department in the project. 

In 2020 we had to cancel the planned ASAP project. While we had to step away from our plan to travel to Europe and to meet students and faculty who cooperated with us we were still able to produce publications in order to participate in the shows that were held in Germany and Belgium so far.

AAIP "Artists As Independent Publishers" is a project that questions the current "Artist Book" trend and looks into the history and current practice of publishing as an artistic strategy. From the Manifest to the Zine, the book object to the broadsheet, artist have used publishing as a form of creative expression since they had the chance to empower themselves to control the publishing medium they used. 

Especially in the post digital cultural environment, the empowerment, publishing and the ability to express oneself through a medium that is not owned and controlled by a third party becomes a major topic.

When algorithms determine the access of the reach of a message and the publishing channels are monetized and utilized by various interest groups, the independence is the only guarantee of the freedom of the arts.

AAIP will offer participating students and faculty from the partner countries to come to Japan and to meet and discuss the role of publishing for contemporary artists at Geidai.
